FBI: Trump shooter's family was not unarmed before attack

FBI: Trump assailant's interest in science misled family, no concern over weapon-related purchases. Quiet, few friends. Father declines comments.

The FBI revealed that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, had a keen "interest in science" and conducted "experiments." His family, therefore, did not raise concerns about the numerous packages he received, which included materials for making explosives and multiple gun purchases under aliases.

FBI's Statement on Crooks' Interest in Science

The FBI's Pittsburgh Field Office stated that despite the concerning nature of Crooks' activities, his family was not alarmed due to his long-standing interest in science and experiments. This revelation has sparked discussions about the signs of radicalization and the need for increased vigilance, even in unconventional hobbies or interests.

Further investigation uncovered that Crooks made 25 gun-related purchases online and acquired materials for making explosives on six occasions, all using aliases. This raised significant red flags regarding his intentions and the potential for carrying out an attack.
