Fears of Wider Conflict: France Urges Citizens to Leave Lebanon as Tensions Rise
France, US, UK urge citizens to leave Lebanon due to growing Middle East conflict fears. Other countries follow.

Amid growing concerns of a broader Middle East conflict, France has joined the US and the UK in advising its residents in Lebanon to depart the nation as soon as possible. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the need for urgent travel arrangements in light of the "highly volatile" security situation, mirroring the calls made by the US and the UK.
Embassy Closures and Flight Halts
The escalating tensions have prompted several nations to take precautionary measures, with the UK withdrawing embassy staff families from Beirut and Sweden closing its embassy in the city. Additionally, multiple airlines, including Air France and Lufthansa, have suspended their flights to and from Lebanon, further underlining the growing apprehensions over the situation.
Roots of the Escalation
The recent spike in regional tensions stems from the assassination of top Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut, which resulted in a vow of retaliation from Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah. The strike, which caused numerous civilian casualties, has been identified as a significant development in the conflict's rules of engagement, further amplifying the apprehensions of a potentially serious conflagration.
