Fireworks on July 4 Pose Growing Wildfire Threat, Caution Urged in California

As July 4 approaches, many people look forward to celebrating with fireworks. The colorful displays lighting up the sky are a beloved Independence Day tradition. However, in wildfire-prone California, the use of fireworks poses a significant danger, especially during hot and dry weather conditions.

Incidents Caused by Illegal Fireworks

Recently, two brush fires erupted in the East Bay, and officials suspect that these fires were caused by illegal fireworks. The state has already experienced 916 wildfires sparked by fireworks in 2021, resulting in over $3.2 million in property damage. The previous year, more than 2,000 fires were attributed to fireworks, leading to $8 million in property damage, as well as injuries and fatalities. These alarming statistics underscore the serious consequences of fireworks misuse.

Nationwide Impact

While fireworks-related wildfires are a significant concern in California, they are not limited to the state. A study published in the journal PLoS One revealed that between 1980 and 2016, over 11,000 wildfires across the country were caused by fireworks. Furthermore, two-thirds of these incidents occurred within a two-week period surrounding July 4.
