Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Faces Legal Action Over Migrant Flights to Martha’s Vineyard
Migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis can sue the aviation company for targeting Latinx immigrants. Residents provided resources, National Guard activated.

On September 14, 2022, a group of fifty Venezuelans arrived at Martha's Vineyard Airport in Massachusetts, sparking a legal battle and public uproar. The migrants, who were promised work and housing, had been flown to the upscale enclave from San Antonio, Texas, nearly two years ago. This move, orchestrated by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, sought to draw attention to the Biden administration's handling of border policies.
A Massachusetts federal judge ruled that the migrants have the right to sue the Florida-based aviation company, Vertol Systems Co., which organized the flights for a sum of $1.5 million. The judge's 77-page ruling pointed to the company's alleged targeting of the migrants due to their Latinx background. While DeSantis was initially named in the lawsuit, the judge dropped the case against him, citing insufficient evidence.
DeSantis' Response
Staunchly defending the legality of the flights, DeSantis' office asserted that the relocation was authorized by the Florida Legislature. The governor's team expressed anticipation for further "illegal immigrant relocation flights" from Florida, underscoring their intention to draw national attention to the southern border crisis.
Community Response
The sudden arrival of the migrants caught the island's residents off guard, prompting a scramble to provide resources and necessitating the activation of the National Guard. After two days, the migrants were transported to military housing on the Cape Cod mainland.
The situation has not only elevated the ongoing debate over immigration policies but has also brought to light the legal and ethical complexities surrounding the transportation and settlement of migrants within the United States.
