Florida Man Arrested After Attempted Break-In and Hooters Disturbance

A Florida man, Hugh McMenamin, 44, was arrested last week after a series of disruptive events, culminating in an attempted break-in at a home in Cape Coral. The string of incidents started at a Hooters restaurant and ended with the homeowner opening fire on McMenamin.

Disruption at Hooters and Attempted Break-In

According to local outlets, McMenamin caused a disturbance at a Hooters restaurant location, refusing to leave and creating a ruckus. Following this episode, he allegedly targeted a local home for a break-in.

The police report states that McMenamin approached a residential Cape Coral home, knocking down portions of the house's 6-foot fence before kicking in the front door. In the midst of the attempted break-in, he reportedly dropped his mother’s debit card on the property’s driveway and tried to enter through a window.

Arrest and Charges

The homeowner, armed with a firearm, fired shots at McMenamin, leading to his arrest shortly after the incident. McMenamin has been charged with criminal mischief, property damage, and burglary of an occupied structure, as per his booking records for Lee County.

McMenamin's History and Current Custody

Arrest records indicate that McMenamin had previous run-ins with the law, including an arrest in June of last year for violating parole and another in 2021 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in police custody as of Sunday.
