Florida Marine Center celebrates the release of rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtles into the Atlantic

Two loggerhead sea turtles, Cayman and Finley, were joyfully released back into the Atlantic Ocean after rehabilitation at a Florida marine life center.

On May 13, 2024, a heartwarming scene unfolded at a Florida marine life center as two loggerhead sea turtles, Cayman and Finley, were released back into the Atlantic Ocean after undergoing rehabilitation. Both turtles arrived at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach due to separate incidents that left them injured. Cayman had an entangled front left flipper, requiring surgery after being brought to the center on February 6. According to Dr. Heather Barron, the center's chief science officer, Cayman has fully recovered from the surgery and showed no signs of scarring.

Finley, on the other hand, had a fishing hook embedded in his shoulder when he arrived on April 27. Fortunately, after receiving a round of antibiotics to prevent infection, Finley was also deemed healthy enough to be released back into the ocean.

A Joyous Return to the Ocean

As the two turtles were released onto the beach just across from the research center, a crowd gathered to cheer and take photos as Cayman and Finley slowly made their way into the Atlantic Ocean. Andy Dehart, the center's president and CEO, expressed the staff's excitement, emphasizing that witnessing the turtles' return to their natural habitat is the most rewarding aspect of their work.

"It’s always a celebration on the beach. To see them return to the ocean is the best part of our job,"

The heartening release of these rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtles serves as a testament to the dedication and care provided by the marine life center, ensuring the well-being and survival of these majestic creatures.
