Florida Mom Joins Bus Stop Brawl, Sheriff Calls It 'Bad Example' for Kids
A Florida mom allegedly joined daughter's bus stop fight, leading to arrests. Sheriff's office criticized her for setting a bad example.

At a Florida bus stop in Daytona North on August 15th, 2022, a conflict between two high school students escalated when one of the mothers, identified as Kathryn Stephanopoulos, 34, joined in. The incident, stemming from a summer fallout between the students, quickly turned chaotic as the mother allegedly became physically involved.
Escalation of the Conflict
Deputies from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office were summoned to the bus stop after the two teenage girls, upon disembarking, agreed to engage in a physical altercation. The dispute, which was recorded on video and later shared by the sheriff's office, took an unexpected turn when one of the students' mothers intervened.
According to the law enforcement report, the video footage depicted Kathryn Stephanopoulos entering the altercation and, at one point, restraining a child in a headlock, prompting shocked reactions from onlookers. The situation further deteriorated as, following the initial scuffle, Stephanopoulos' daughter allegedly initiated another fight with a different student who was attempting to intervene, leading to a series of confrontations at the bus stop.
Arrest and Consequences
Subsequently, Kathryn Stephanopoulos was apprehended and taken into custody, facing charges related to her involvement in the altercation. The authorities emphasized the severity of the situation, particularly highlighting the inappropriate conduct demonstrated by a parent in the presence of multiple minors.
Sheriff Rick Staly issued a statement condemning the mother's actions, stating, "Instead of deescalating the situation, we have a mother who joined in the fray, setting a bad example for her child and those at the bus stop. She certainly won’t receive mother of the year with her actions. Parents need to set the example and not be part of the problem. Luckily, no one was seriously injured, but now a mother is facing serious charges for losing control of her temper."
Legal Ramifications and Juvenile Charges
As a result of the bus stop altercation, one juvenile participant was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, while the other student faced misdemeanor charges, which were subsequently referred to the state attorney’s office. The law enforcement officers underscored the significance of addressing such incidents firmly, especially when they involve individuals under the legal adult age.
Law Enforcement Response
In light of the concerning nature of the bus stop confrontation, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office reiterated the imperative need for parents and guardians to exemplify responsible and considerate behavior, particularly in circumstances where impressionable young individuals are present. The enforcement of appropriate conduct, as well as the enforcement of legal consequences for misconduct, remains essential in fostering a safe and secure environment for all members of the community, including its youth.
