Former Brigham and Women’s Hospital Rheumatologist Accused of Sexual Abuse by Over 200 Patients
More than 200 women and men file a lawsuit against a former Boston rheumatologist accused of unnecessary and invasive examinations.
Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Exposes Shocking Abuse
BOSTON (April 2023) - A shocking case of medical malpractice has come to light, revealing a pattern of abuse that has affected more than 200 women and several men. The victims have filed a consolidated lawsuit against former rheumatologist Dr. Derrick Todd in Massachusetts' Suffolk Superior Court.
Revelations of Abuse
The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Todd, who practiced at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, began abusing patients as far back as 2010. The allegations include performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations, and rectal examinations on patients. The abuse came to light when more than 200 women and several men joined the lawsuit, revealing the extent of the violations they endured at the hands of a trusted medical professional.
Failure to Stop the Abuse
The lawsuit not only targets Dr. Todd but also accuses several dozen other defendants, including Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and Charles River Medical Associates, of knowing about the abuse and failing to stop it. The victims' attorney expressed disbelief at how the abuse could have continued for so long without anyone taking action to stop it.
Hospital's Response
Brigham and Women’s Hospital responded to the allegations by launching an internal investigation in April 2023 after receiving two anonymous complaints about Dr. Todd. The hospital took decisive action by placing Dr. Todd on administrative leave and ultimately terminating his employment in response to the allegations. The hospital also notified the appropriate authorities and reached a voluntary agreement with the Board of Registration in Medicine, resulting in Dr. Todd ceasing to practice medicine anywhere in the country.
Impact on Victims
The victims of Dr. Todd's abuse ranged in age from teenagers to women in their 60s. The abuse had a profound impact on their lives, with many struggling to cope with the trauma they endured. The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Todd went beyond treating rheumatic diseases and conducted invasive, unnecessary exams, exploiting the trust of his patients for his own gratification.
Victims Speak Out
The victims have shown remarkable courage in coming forward to share their experiences. Their accounts reveal a pattern of manipulation and abuse that has left lasting emotional and psychological scars. One victim described the weight being lifted off her chest upon learning that Dr. Todd would no longer practice medicine, but she continues to struggle to cope with the aftermath of the abuse.
Seeking Justice
While the victims acknowledge that the experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives, they are seeking justice and accountability for the trauma they endured. They are determined to ensure that Dr. Todd is held accountable and never able to inflict similar harm on others.
