Former Los Angeles High School Guidance Counselor Charged with Sexual Assault on Minor Student
A former high school counselor faces charges for sexually assaulting a student, with possible additional victims believed to exist.
A former high school guidance counselor in Los Angeles, Julie Tichon, 37, faces serious legal consequences after being charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student. The case, which has raised concerns of potential additional victims, highlights a breach of trust by a trusted figure in the educational community.
Allegations and Charges Against Julie Tichon
Tichon, who previously worked at YULA High School in West Los Angeles, has been accused of exploiting her position to establish inappropriate sexual relationships with students. The Los Angeles Police Detective Russ Hess stated that Tichon "used her position of responsibility to gain these victims’ trust," ultimately leading to her alleged abuse of a 16-year-old male student. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has formally charged her with three felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger and one felony count of oral copulation of a person under 18.
Potential Sentencing and Impact on Victims
If convicted, Tichon could face a maximum of five years in prison, as confirmed by the LAPD. The alleged unlawful sexual relationship unfolded between February and March 2024. Despite being charged with assaulting a single victim, investigators believe there may be other students who have yet to come forward, potentially leading to an expanded criminal case against Tichon.
The Community's Response
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón emphasized the profound impact of such breaches of trust within the educational system, stating, "When that trust is broken, it affects the entire community." Gascón underscored the commitment of the District Attorney’s office to seek justice for the victim and hold Tichon accountable for her alleged actions. He extended support to all victims and families affected by similar crimes, assuring them of their dedication to safety and justice.
Legal Proceedings and School’s Statement
Tichon pleaded not guilty during an arraignment hearing on September 19 and was released on her own recognizance by the Los Angeles Superior Court. Her next court appearance is scheduled for November 1. In response to the charges, YULA High School expressed its commitment to the safety and wellness of its students, while refraining from discussing specifics related to the ongoing legal proceedings.
