On March 15th, 18-year-old Justin Uzonna Anabaraonye and 19-year-old Paul Tomas Baylor III were arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty in Maryland. This followed an investigation that revealed charred remains of several domesticated dogs on a property in Cumberland.

Beginning of the Investigation

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation after receiving reports of animal cruelty on March 12th. Deputies were presented with photographs showing the charred remains of domesticated dogs, prompting them to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.

Discovery of Charred Remains

During the execution of a search warrant on March 15th at a property in the 13000 block of Tulip Street in Cumberland, investigators found the charred remains of seven dogs in a wooded area, resembling a burn pile. Additionally, skeletal remains of numerous other dogs were discovered during the search of the property.

Assistance from the State Fire Marshal

The investigation enlisted the help of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which deployed a K9 team to the property. The dogs indicated that an accelerant had been used to start the fires, providing crucial evidence for the case.

Transfer of Remains and Charges

The remains of the dogs were turned over to the Humane Society of the United States for further investigation to determine the cause of their deaths. Meanwhile, Paul Thomas Baylor III and Justin Uzonna Anabaraonye have been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Baylor faces four counts, while Anabaraonye faces six counts along with an additional count of aggravated animal cruelty.

Legal Proceedings and Detainment

Following their arrest, both men were remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, where they were held pending a bond review.
