Former Reporter Reaches $235,000 Settlement in Lawsuit Over Newspaper Raid
Former reporter reaches $235,000 settlement over raid on Kansas newspaper, ending national debate on press freedoms.

Almost a year after the raid on The Marion County Record, a former reporter has reached a settlement of $235,000 as part of a lawsuit over the search, sparking a nationwide debate about press freedoms.
June 25th Settlement
The settlement, dated June 25, marks the resolution of the lawsuit filed by the former reporter, Deb Gruver, against Gideon Cody, who resigned as the Marion city police chief in October amid increasing pressure.
Allegations of Personal Injury
Ms. Gruver’s lawsuit alleged that Mr. Cody had caused injury to her hand while forcefully obtaining her personal cellphone during the raid. According to Eric Meyer, the newspaper’s publisher, body-camera footage supported Ms. Gruver’s claims.
Mr. Meyer stated that body-camera audio recorded Mr. Cody “saying that it just made his day,” providing incriminating evidence in the case.
