Four Inmates Escape From Tangipahoa Parish Jail Due to Structural Issues and Lack of Oversight

Four men escaped from Tangipahoa Parish Jail due to a structural issue, lack of oversight, and evading correction officers. Two men remained at large.

The escape occurred when the four men evaded correction officers during recreation time in the yard. They took advantage of an eight-inch gap under a wall and hid until darkness fell. Subsequently, they scaled two fences before fleeing the premises.

Two of the escapees, Avery Guidry, 19, and Travon Johnson, 21, successfully left the jail on Saturday. The other two inmates, Omarion Hookfin, 19, and Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, replicated the escape route the following day.

Search and Capture

As of Monday night, two of the men remained at large while the other two were found hiding in a dumpster. Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing the remaining fugitives.

Authorities' Response

Jimmy Travis, the chief of operations for the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office, attributed the escape to structural issues and criticized the lack of oversight by the jail staff in a news conference on Monday.

The authorities are taking measures to address the security lapses and prevent future escape attempts.
