According to authorities, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. However, the suspect's mother, Marcee Gray, allegedly placed a phone call to the school at 9:50 a.m., as revealed by her sister, Annie Brown. Following the shooting, Ms. Gray reportedly reached out to Ms. Brown through a text message, stating that she had informed a counselor at the school about the impending danger.

The Washington Post was the first to report on the phone call, citing Ms. Brown, text messages, and a call log from the family's shared phone plan, which indicated a 10-minute phone call from the mother's number to the school. Additionally, a federal law enforcement official confirmed that the mother contacted the school shortly before the tragic incident.
