Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized in New York City After Rape Conviction Nullified
Harvey Weinstein hospitalized in NYC for tests after court nullifies 2020 rape conviction. Physical ailments persist, mentally sharp. Retrial expected.

Harvey Weinstein, the former movie mogul, returned to New York City following an appeals court ruling that nullified his 2020 rape conviction. Upon his arrival on Friday, he was immediately moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for a battery of tests. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, mentioned that Weinstein requires significant physical help and is undergoing various tests, highlighting his deteriorating health condition.
Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, confirmed that Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue. The hospital had received him after his arrival from city jails. However, a message seeking comment with state corrections officials was not immediately returned, adding to the lack of precise information regarding his condition.
The New York Court of Appeals vacated Weinstein's conviction, citing that the trial judge allowed jurors to be exposed to evidence that was not directly related to the charges he faced. This decision also led to the erasure of his 23-year prison sentence and ordered a retrial. Prosecutors have indicated their intention to retry him on charges related to sexual assault incidents.
Health Issues
It has been reported that Weinstein has been battling numerous health issues, including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea and eye ailments. His lawyer affirmed that while he has physical ailments, mentally, he remains sharp and composed.
Aidala conveyed that Weinstein was not treated well during his transit to New York City, emphasizing that he was denied water, food, or a bathroom break. The lawyer further expressed disappointment over the treatment of Weinstein, who is described as a 72-year-old ailing man.
It has been stated that doctors at Bellevue plan to conduct numerous tests on Weinstein before deciding on his return to the Rikers Island jail complex. Additionally, it has been scheduled for his lawyer to meet Weinstein on Monday, with plans to request a retrial after Labor Day during the upcoming court appearance on Wednesday in Manhattan.
