Helicopter Rescue Saves Six Trapped Miners After Deadly Taiwan Earthquake
Taiwan's worst earthquake in 25 years caused death, injuries, and destruction. Hundreds seek shelter as aftershocks continue.

As Taiwan grapples with the aftermath of its worst earthquake in 25 years, search and rescue operations are underway to assist those affected by the disaster. The earthquake, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, has resulted in significant damage and casualties.
Helicopter Rescue Operation
On Thursday, a helicopter successfully rescued six individuals who were stranded in a mining area, providing much-needed relief to those affected by the earthquake. Additionally, efforts to locate and aid hundreds of others impacted by the disaster are ongoing, with scores of individuals seeking shelter outdoors due to the continuing aftershocks.
Impact and Casualties
The death toll from the earthquake has risen to 10, with 1,067 individuals reported as injured. Furthermore, approximately 660 people remain trapped, primarily in hotels in a national park, following the closure of roads due to the earthquake. The discovery of a deceased individual on a hiking trail near the entrance to a gorge has brought the total number of deaths to 10.
Precautionary Measures
The agriculture ministry has issued a warning urging individuals to steer clear of mountainous areas due to the risk of falling rocks and the potential formation of "barrier lakes" as water accumulates behind unstable debris.
Holiday Disruption
The earthquake has coincided with the start of a long-weekend holiday for the tomb-sweeping festival. While this period typically sees families returning home to pay respects at ancestral graves, the earthquake has prompted a reevaluation of travel and leisure plans for many.
Impact on Residents
Residents in affected areas, including the largely rural and sparsely populated Hualien county, have been significantly impacted by the earthquake. Many individuals were preparing to go about their daily routines when the earthquake struck, causing widespread disruption and damage.
Rescue and Recovery Challenges
While significant progress has been made in rescuing individuals trapped in buildings, the ongoing aftershocks have left many residents apprehensive. Numerous individuals have opted to spend the night outdoors, expressing fear and uncertainty about the situation.
