Hezbollah's Nasrallah vows revenge on Israel over deadly attacks
Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, vows retribution against Israel for recent deadly attacks, amid escalating regional tensions and uncertainty over casualties.
Hassan Nasrallah, chief of the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, announced on Thursday that his organization intends to seek vengeance against Israel for recent coordinated attacks involving detonated pagers and hand-held radios, which resulted in the death of 37 individuals and left thousands more injured. Israel, according to Nasrallah, “will face just retribution and a bitter reckoning.” However, he refrained from disclosing details about the timing, method, or location of the anticipated retaliation.
Nasrallah's remarks came as Israeli fighter jets flew over Beirut, causing sonic booms that startled residents. The attacks, which occurred earlier this week, were widely attributed to Israel, although the country has not officially claimed responsibility. The booby-trapped wireless devices belonging to Hezbollah members detonated across Lebanon, causing injuries to over 2,900 people. The distinction between civilians and militants among the injured remains largely ambiguous.
Regional Tensions and Implications
The coordinated attacks have heightened tensions in a region already experiencing instability. Following the Hamas-led assault on October 7 that triggered the conflict in Gaza, Israel deployed troops to its northern border in anticipation of a potential similar incursion by Hezbollah. Both Hamas and Hezbollah receive backing from Iran and are committed to Israel's annihilation.
