Hiker Rescued After 10-Hour Ordeal in Harsh Conditions on New Hampshire's Mount Washington

A dramatic rescue operation took place on New Hampshire's Mount Washington, as a team of rescuers battled treacherous conditions to save an ill-prepared hiker. The operation, which involved the use of the Cog Railway, lasted more than 10 hours and showcased the bravery and skill of the rescue teams.

Treacherous conditions and ill-prepared hiker

The hiker, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, found himself in perilous conditions on Mount Washington. Despite being unequipped for the harsh winter weather, which included sustained winds of over 90 mph and a wind chill of minus-52 degrees Fahrenheit, the hiker continued his solo trek after seeing other groups turn back due to the dangerous gusts.

The situation quickly escalated when the hiker fell and required assistance. At this point, global positioning coordinates indicated he was in a ravine at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet. The hiker's unpreparedness for the conditions left him vulnerable and in urgent need of rescue.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officer, Sgt. Glen Lucas, provided details of the challenging rescue operation. It took rescuers more than three hours to warm the hypothermic hiker, involving the removal of his frozen clothing and the replacement with new gear. The rescue efforts were further hampered by the difficult conditions, with the operation lasting well into the night, as the hiker was not returned to safety until close to midnight.

The rescue operation involved a total of 11 rescuers from various specialized teams, including the state's Advanced Search and Rescue Team, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team, and Mountain Rescue Service. These dedicated individuals put their own safety at risk to assist the imperiled hiker.
