Hiker Survives 1,000-Foot Fall in Hawaii, Traveler Arrested with Hand Grenades at Airport

In a shocking incident at Hilo International Airport in Hawaii, a traveler from Japan was arrested for "terroristic threatening" after allegedly bringing two hand grenades in his carry-on luggage. The airport was evacuated on Tuesday as authorities discovered two grenade-like items during X-ray screening.

Discovery of Suspicious Items

At around 5:30 a.m. local time, TSA agents detected two items resembling grenades in the carry-on bag of the traveler, identified as Akito Fukushima from Kanazawa, Japan. The airport was consequently evacuated as a precautionary measure, and the Hawaii Police Department’s bomb squad was summoned to investigate the situation.

Resolution of the Incident

Following a thorough inspection by specialists, the TSA confirmed that the grenades were ultimately deemed to be inert. Subsequently, at 6:45 a.m., Fukushima was arrested and taken to the East Hawaii Detention Facility by the police. Operations at the airport resumed at 6:50 a.m., marking the end of the security scare.
