The House Homeland Security Committee is set to conduct its final hearing on the impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. During the forthcoming hearing, the committee will hear testimonies from an Arizona sheriff and individuals affected by fentanyl overdoses or violent crime. House Republicans have accused Mayorkas of negligence in enforcing immigration laws amid a surge in arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Department of Homeland Security has denounced the impeachment effort as politically motivated, while Democrats argue that there are no legal grounds for impeachment. Despite the impeachment proceedings, Mayorkas has been one of the most frequently testifying Cabinet officials, having appeared before Congress 27 times in less than three years. The possibility of Mayorkas being convicted in a Senate trial is unlikely, given the Democratic majority in the Senate. Regardless of the outcome, Mayorkas would be the first Cabinet official to be impeached since 1876.
