
Howler Monkeys' Mysterious Deaths in Mexico Linked to Extreme Heat and Climate Change

Since May 16, at least 138 howler monkeys have been found dead in Mexico as a result of a heat wave that saw temperatures soar to as high as 113 degrees. The severe heat, attributed to the current El Niño cycle, has had dire consequences for both humans and wildlife in the region. Wildlife biologist Gilberto Pozo reported that the monkeys suffered from severe dehydration and succumbed to the extreme temperatures within minutes.
El Niño, a cyclical climate phenomenon, has been intensified in recent years by the effects of climate change. Nikhil Advani, senior director for wildlife and climate resilience at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), explained that this combination of factors has proved fatal for various species, including the howler monkeys. The monkeys, known for their distinctive roars, have been unable to tolerate the unprecedented temperatures brought about by this phenomenon.
Advani further highlighted that the rising temperatures have forced animals to seek new habitats and, in some cases, led to physical adaptations to survive in the changing environments. Moreover, the scarcity of water due to extreme heat events has amplified the impact on various species, leading to a shortage of food and potential extinction risks.
Long-Term Effects of Climate Change
Besides the immediate impact of extreme heat, climate change is also contributing to the long-term degradation of ecosystems. Rising ocean temperatures, for instance, have resulted in the bleaching of approximately 63% of the world’s coral reefs, with profound repercussions for marine biodiversity. Advani emphasized the critical role of coral reefs as the foundation of marine ecosystems and noted the significant reduction in species diversity following the loss of these vital ecosystems.
Protecting Wildlife Amid Climate Challenges
Recognizing the urgency of addressing the impact of climate change on wildlife, conservationists have been implementing various initiatives to mitigate the negative effects. The WWF has funded 25 projects globally, including the Wildlife Adaptation Innovation Fund, which aims to support vulnerable animal populations.
Some specific measures being undertaken include improving nesting conditions for birds, creating artificial shade structures near watering holes, regulating sand temperatures for sea turtles, and providing additional water sources for animals. However, Advani cautioned that while these solutions show promise, the adaption of wildlife to these interventions remains a challenge, necessitating careful testing and scaling of successful approaches.
