Hurricane Milton Approaches Lake Okeechobee: Officials Assure Safety Amid Tropical Storm Warning

Lake Okeechobee is under storm warnings as Hurricane Milton approaches, but officials assure the safety of the dike and lake levels.

As Lake Okeechobee remains vigilant under a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch, the approaching Hurricane Milton poses a significant challenge as it heads toward Florida's west coast, potentially making its way just north of the state's vital connection to the Everglades. The Army Corps has assured the public that following the completion of restoration and repairs to the 143-mile Herbert Hoover Dike in 2023, they have no concerns regarding its ability to contain the expansive 730-square-mile lake.

Hurricane Milton Approaches Lake Okeechobee

As of Monday, Lake Okeechobee was reported to be approximately 15.5 feet above sea level, indicating a 6-inch decrease compared to the same period last year. Michele Roberts, chief of corporate communications for the Corps, emphasized that the infusion of water from Hurricane Helene was negligible, allowing Lake Okeechobee to absorb the impending storm's impact. Additionally, she noted that the strengthened safety rating of the dike permits retaining water at slightly elevated levels if deemed necessary.

Monitoring and Management

Historically, monitoring lake levels is crucial for safeguarding both habitat and public safety. An older management plan preferred maintaining Lake Okeechobee levels between 12.5 feet and 17.5 feet above sea level, considering its role in nourishing the Everglades prior to the establishment of the dike. The Corps has assured the public that the water levels remain consistent with the previous management strategy, now referred to as the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual. Furthermore, they reiterated that current monitoring efforts exhibit no concerns regarding the safety or levels of the lake.
