Emergency Bridge Repairs Cause Closure of Interstate 5 Southbound Lanes
Portland, Oregon - April 8, 2021
Bridge Joint Failure
At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced the closure of all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 for emergency repair work due to a failed bridge joint. The joint, which holds together two sections of the freeway over Greeley Avenue, requires immediate attention. According to ODOT officials, bridge joints are critical for connecting different sections of highways that pass over creeks, culverts, and roads.
Traffic Diversion and Duration of Closure
Motorists are being diverted onto southbound Interstate 405 and the Fremont Bridge while the repair work is underway. The closure is expected to last until midnight, as crews work diligently to resolve the issue.
Nature of the Problem
ODOT spokesperson, Don Hamilton, clarified that the issue is a result of regular wear and tear and does not pose any structural concerns. However, the bridge joint problem can lead to bouncing in the area, causing concrete to crack and even drop, creating a hazardous situation for drivers. The repair process involves forming up the concrete from underneath, removing the old joint, and repaving, with a curing time of 3-4 hours for the concrete.
Impact on Traffic
The closure of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 is expected to have a significant impact on traffic in the area, with diversions and delays likely during the evening commute.
