Illinois and West Virginia School Bus Crashes Leave Students and Driver Injured

On Monday, a school bus crash in West Virginia led to the arrest of the driver, Jeffrey Brannon, for driving under the influence. The incident occurred on West Virginia Route 16 in Calhoun County. Multiple students were injured and had to be transported to area hospitals for treatment. The crash occurred when Brannon lost control of the bus, causing it to roll over on its side in the middle of Route 16.

Arrest and Charges

State Police Capt. Robert Maddy stated that Brannon, 54, was charged with multiple counts of driving while intoxicated and child neglect resulting in injury. When police arrived at the scene, Brannon was reportedly acting aggressively. Upon questioning, it was found that he had been drinking. A field breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.161%, significantly higher than the legal limit of 0.08% in West Virginia. Another test at the Grantsville State Police Detachment showed a blood alcohol level of 0.127%.

Legal Proceedings

Bond was set at $250,000 for Brannon at the Calhoun County Magistrate Court, and he was subsequently transported to the Central Regional Jail. There is uncertainty regarding whether Brannon has legal representation at this time.

Current Status

The Calhoun County Schools superintendent's office did not immediately respond to requests for comments. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Injuries and Impact

Out of the 19 students on the bus, several were taken to hospitals for injuries. Reports indicate that one child sustained a vertebrae fracture, while another suffered a concussion. The full extent of injuries is yet to be disclosed.
