Indiana teacher found dead in school stairwell after failing to leave for ride home, police say
A Heartbreaking Discovery
The East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School community was met with a tragic discovery as the lifeless body of Craig Jones, a 47-year-old teacher, was found in a school stairwell. This devastating event unfolded after the educator failed to depart from the premises the previous evening despite calling a relative to pick him up.
The Grim Find
According to the East Chicago Police, maintenance staff stumbled upon Jones' body on the landing of a second-floor stairwell the following morning. This distressing find has left the school community and local authorities in shock.
An Unfulfilled Request
The circumstances leading up to this tragic incident began when Jones reached out to his family at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, seeking assistance to return home after indicating earlier in the day that he would be working late. A relative promptly responded to his request by arriving at the school. However, despite the relative's presence, Jones failed to emerge from the building. Subsequently, after no further communication from Jones, the relative departed from the location.
Investigation Underway
Upon the discovery of Jones' body, law enforcement officials were summoned to the scene. The Lake County Coroner's Office is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of death, as confirmed by deputy coroner Eric Graf. Additionally, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is also involved in the investigation, although authorities have indicated that there is presently no evidence suggesting foul play.
This heartbreaking incident has undoubtedly left the school community and the broader East Chicago area in mourning, as they come to terms with the loss of a dedicated teacher. The circumstances surrounding Jones' passing serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones.
