A 31-year-old man from Peekskill, New York, has been indicted for the murder of a social worker who tragically passed away as a result of an alleged attack while she was on duty. The incident, which occurred on May 14, has sparked outrage and sorrow within the community.
Victim's Severe Injuries and Tragic Passing
The victim, identified as 56-year-old Maria Coto, was conducting home visits in Peekskill when she was subjected to a vicious and fatal assault. The accused, Hasseem Jenkins, is said to have repeatedly punched her in the face, chased her into a neighbor’s apartment, and viciously kicked her in the head while wearing heavy boots. The attack resulted in severe brain injuries, swelling, and multiple facial fractures. Despite being placed on a ventilator, Coto remained unconscious until her untimely death on June 19.
Criminal Charges and Legal Proceedings
Jenkins faces a series of serious charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree burglary, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree robbery, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned earlier this week and is currently in custody at the Westchester County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, as confirmed by officials.
Unanswered Questions and Legal Representation
As the case unfolds, many questions remain unanswered. The motive behind the heinous attack was not disclosed in the statement released by Westchester District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah. Furthermore, it is unclear whether there was any prior connection between Jenkins and Coto. Jenkins is being represented by a public defender, who, as of Thursday afternoon, could not be reached for comment. Similarly, no contact has been made with Coto's family members for their perspective on the devastating events.
