Iranian Diplomats Killed in Syria: Lebanese Security Source
Iranian commander Zahedi dead, diplomats killed in Syria.
Reports from a Lebanese security source to Reuters have revealed the death of Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a prominent leader in Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), in a tragic incident in the Mezzeh district of the Syrian capital. Iranian state television also confirmed the deaths of several Iranian diplomats in the same event. The scene of the incident depicted a grim picture, with smoke billowing from the remnants of a demolished building and emergency vehicles stationed outside. Notably, an Iranian flag was observed amidst the debris, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Presence of Syrian and Iranian Foreign Ministers
Adding to the gravity of the situation, both the Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers were present at the site, underlining the significance of the event on an international level. Amidst these developments, Israel, known for its history of targeting Iranian interests, maintained its silence, adhering to its standard policy of refraining from commenting on reports in foreign media. The Israeli military spokesperson reiterated this stance, stating, "We do not comment on reports in the foreign media."
Escalating Tensions in the Region
Notably, tensions in the region have been escalating, particularly since the Iranian-backed Palestinian faction Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Subsequently, Israel has intensified its airstrikes in Syria, targeting Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia and Iran's Guards, both of which have been supporters of President Bashar al-Assad's government.
