Iranian Refugee Risks Dangerous Channel Crossing in Search of New Life

On a chilly March morning, Mohsen, a 36-year-old man hailing from Iran, found himself being rushed onto a rubber boat by smugglers along the French coast. Despite the serene waters and clear skies, he was acutely aware of the dangers that lay ahead. Statistics reveal that since 2018, a harrowing 72 individuals have tragically lost their lives in the English Channel while endeavoring similar crossings, as stated by the International Organization for Migration.

Mohsen disclosed that he fled from Iran due to being threatened with arrest by law enforcement officers. This distressing situation arose after his involvement in anti-government demonstrations last year. Fearful for his safety, he felt compelled to embark on this treacherous journey in pursuit of asylum.

Hope Amidst Uncertainty

Though fully cognizant of the British government's controversial proposal to deport certain asylum seekers to Rwanda, which was initially introduced in 2022, Mohsen was resolute in his decision. Even in the face of this disconcerting knowledge, he remained steadfast in his willingness to risk everything for the prospect of a fresh start in Britain. Seeking anonymity to shield his asylum application, he urged for his identity to be safeguarded, opting to be identified solely by his first name.
