Israel Launches Targeted Strikes on Hezbollah's Financial Hub Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

A new wave of Israeli airstrikes has commenced, targeting various locations across Lebanon, including areas alarmingly close to the nation's sole international airport. This military offensive is aimed at the Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, a banking institution that Israel designates as the financial arm of Hezbollah.

The airstrikes were initiated on the heels of a drone attempt on the private residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Caesarea. Although Netanyahu and his wife were not present during the incident, the attempt was condemned as a "grave mistake." The following day, as detonations shook Beirut, the strikes on Al-Qard al-Hassan commenced in earnest.The Israel Defense Forces promptly articulated the intention behind the strikes, asserting that the institution provides direct funding to Hezbollah's activities, including the acquisition of weaponry and payments to operatives." The strikes, according to the IDF, targeted Al-Qard al-Hassan facilities not only in Beirut but also in southern Lebanon and deeper within Lebanese territory. Furthermore, the ongoing campaign in the south has reportedly struck 15 Hezbollah missile launchers aimed at northern Israel. In their statement, the IDF emphasized the efforts made to minimize civilian casualties, including advance warnings to the affected population.

However, the relentless bombardment has exacerbated the strain on already-overburdened hospitals, compelling more individuals to evacuate their homes. Lebanese officials have reported that 1.2 million people across the country have been displaced due to the intensified Israeli airstrikes, which began escalating sharply one month ago.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has deployed the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel, accompanied by around 100 American troops. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin underscored the prompt operational capability of the system while reiterating the Biden administration's stance against supporting Israeli counterattacks on Iran's nuclear facilities and oil infrastructure.
