Israeli Military Successfully Rescues Hostages from Gaza Strip
RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military has reported the successful rescue of two hostages from captivity in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant milestone in their efforts to bring home over 100 captives believed to be held by the Hamas militant group. The rescue operation, which took place early Monday, resulted in the extraction of two men from a residential building in the southern border town of Rafah. However, the raid also led to the deaths of at least seven people, as confirmed by Palestinian officials. Witnesses recounted at least 17 airstrikes, flares, and Apache helicopter fire during the mission.
Rescued Hostages and Operation Details
The two rescued hostages have been identified as Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, and the Israeli military has reported that both men are in good medical condition. According to the army, both individuals were abducted by Hamas militants from Kibbutz Nir Yizhak during the cross-border attack on Oct. 7, which served as the catalyst for the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Their successful extraction marks the second and third instances of hostages being rescued safely.
Lt. Col. Richard Hecht highlighted that the operation was executed based on "precise intelligence," and that the targeted site, situated on the second floor of a building, had been under surveillance for a period of time. He further informed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was present alongside Israel's military chief and other top officials during the raid.
Conflict Background and Hostage Situation
The Oct. 7 raid orchestrated by Hamas militants resulted in an estimated 1,200 casualties and the abduction of 250 individuals, triggering the ongoing war. Subsequently, an Israeli air and ground offensive has led to the deaths of over 28,000 Palestinians according to local health officials. While over 100 hostages were liberated during a weeklong cease-fire in November, Israel asserts that approximately 100 hostages are still in the captivity of Hamas. Additionally, Hamas is holding the remains of roughly 30 others who were either killed on Oct. 7 or died in captivity.
Israel's Commitment to Hostage Rescue
The rescue of all hostages has been a primary objective for Israel throughout the course of the war, reaffirming their commitment to secure the safe return of all captives.
