Israeli Soldiers Charged with Torturing Palestinian Detainee
Five Israeli reservist soldiers are charged with severely abusing a Palestinian detainee at a military base in southern Israel.

Five Israeli reservist soldiers were charged with abuse of a Palestinian detainee by an Israeli military prosecutor on Wednesday. The alleged incident occurred last year at the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel, where thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been held.
According to the indictment, the soldiers at the Sde Teiman base are accused of causing severe injuries to the detainee, identified only by his initials. These injuries include broken ribs, a punctured left lung, and a torn rectum.
Defense Responses
Avi Amiram and Lior Porat, lawyers representing one of the soldiers, have presented arguments denying the charges against the reservists. Honenu, a right-wing legal organization representing two of the soldiers, criticized the charges and alleged that the detainee was a militant in an elite unit in the northern Gaza Strip. However, The New York Times was unable to independently verify this claim.
Significance and Controversy
The indictment represents some of the most serious allegations of mistreatment at Sde Teiman since the Israeli military launched its offensive in Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023. This case has also brought to light divisions within Israel regarding the accountability of soldiers for alleged abuse of Palestinian detainees accused of involvement in terrorist activity.
