NASA astronaut Jonny Kim has successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) after launching from Kazakhstan on the Russian Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft. The spacecraft docked with the ISS's Prichal module at approximately 4:57 a.m. ET, marking the beginning of Kim's eight-month research mission aboard the space station.
Arrival and Entry
Kim, accompanied by Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, waited for about an hour and a half in the vestibule for the equalization of pressure and completion of leak checks before the hatch between the Russian spacecraft and the ISS was opened at 7:28 a.m. ET. The trio was welcomed onboard the ISS by the Expedition 72 crew, including station commander Alexey Ovchinin, amidst cheers and embraces.
Launch Details
The launch took place at 1:47 a.m. ET from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and was noted for its smooth execution and successful docking. This successful mission paves the way for an 11-day handover between the newly arrived crew and the departing crew, consisting of Ovchinin, NASA astronaut Don Pettit, and cosmonaut Ivan Vagner, who have been aboard the station since September. Pettit is scheduled to land back in Kazakhstan on his 70th birthday, April 20.
Research Mission
Kim's arrival marks the beginning of an eight-month research mission aboard the ISS, where he will contribute to various scientific endeavors.
