Justice Department reveals dismantling of Russian propaganda network
Justice Department dismantles Russian propaganda network with nearly 1,000 covert accounts on social media platform X, posing as Americans.

In a significant development, the Justice Department revealed on Tuesday that it had dismantled a vast Russian propaganda network comprising nearly 1,000 accounts. These accounts were found to be disseminating pro-Russia content on the social media platform X. What made this discovery even more alarming was the revelation that these accounts were posing as Americans, with one account masquerading as a bitcoin investor in Minneapolis. However, it was later disclosed that these accounts were actually operated by Russian operatives who were backed by the Kremlin.
Artificial Intelligence and Disinformation
The Justice Department further disclosed that the Russian operatives had utilized artificial intelligence to create these fictitious accounts, making it easier to produce images and generate text. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted that this network, essentially a bot farm, was being used to spread disinformation not only in the United States but also abroad, particularly regarding Russia’s claims to Ukraine. The department did not specify the extent of the network's success in its disinformation efforts, but it was noted that similar attempts to spread propaganda and misinformation have faced challenges in gaining traction in recent years.
Experts have cautioned that disinformation continues to pose a significant threat, especially in light of the upcoming U.S. election. This warning comes as advanced technology, new tactics, and a general pullback on platform moderation have left social media platforms vulnerable to foreign attacks. Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a cybersecurity advisory in conjunction with Canadian and Dutch authorities, indicating that the Russian operatives behind the network intended to expand their activities to other social media platforms and were utilizing a package of AI software tools known as Meliorator.
International Dissemination of Disinformation
The propaganda posts, which included video clips of Russian President Vladimir Putin discussing Ukraine and justifying Russia’s war, were disseminated to and about several countries, including the United States, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine, and Israel. The people behind the accounts were revealed to be affiliates of RT, a Russian state media organization that is banned in Europe, with RT having agreed to register in the U.S. as a foreign agent in 2017.
