Kenyan President William Ruto Dismisses Cabinet After Anti-Government Protests
Kenyan President Ruto dismissed his cabinet amid protests over a finance bill, pledging to form a more inclusive government.

In a surprising move, President William Ruto of Kenya announced the dismissal of his cabinet, marking a significant shake-up in his administration. This decision comes in the wake of weeks of anti-government protests, during which at least 39 people lost their lives in clashes with the police.
Opposition to Finance Bill
The protests were primarily in opposition to a finance bill that President Ruto had indicated would bring stability to the country’s economy. Despite the president's announcement on June 26 that he would not sign the bill, in a move seen as a victory for the demonstrators, the protests have persisted. Many protesters are now calling for President Ruto's resignation.
President's Address and Future Plans
During a highly anticipated speech at the presidential palace in Nairobi, President Ruto defended his administration's performance since taking office in 2022. However, he acknowledged that the electorate expected more from his government. He outlined plans to engage in extensive consultations across various sectors and political formations, as well as with the public and private sectors, with the goal of establishing a broad-based government.
