King Charles III revealed the first official painted portrait of himself, marking just over a year since his coronation. The stunning oil painting, created by renowned portrait artist Jonathan Yeo, showcases the king gazing directly ahead against a backdrop of swirling red, pink, and fuchsia hues.
The unveiling took place at Buckingham Palace, as announced by the royal family on social media. Video footage captured the king pulling a ribbon that concealed the towering artwork. As the fabric dropped, King Charles III appeared pleasantly surprised by the portrait.
Jonathan Yeo, known for his portraits of notable figures such as David Attenborough, Idris Elba, and activist Malala Yousafzai, commenced the painting in June 2021, during the king's reign as the Prince of Wales. The portrait portrays him adorned in the uniform of the Welsh Guards, where he held the position of Regimental Colonel, while a butterfly hovers delicately over his shoulder.
