The bar authorities in Washington, D.C., have taken disciplinary action against three lawyers who were involved in legal challenges related to the 2020 election on behalf of Donald Trump ally Sidney Powell. The filings made public on Friday accused attorneys Juli Haller, Lawrence Joseph, and Brandon Johnson of presenting knowingly false information to the courts regarding the lawsuits they filed following the 2020 election. Joseph was specifically linked to a lawsuit filed by then-Rep. Louie Gohmert against then-Vice President Mike Pence, which aimed to pressure Pence to assert unprecedented authority in determining the election winner. The lawsuit was ultimately dismissed at multiple levels.
Haller played a significant role in Powell's "Kraken" lawsuits, while Johnson was involved in various Powell-related filings. The charges brought against these lawyers are part of a series of disciplinary actions taken against attorneys involved in the efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The case against these lawyers will be heard by a committee of the D.C. Bar, and if found guilty, they could face sanctions ranging from reprimand to disbarment.
The bar investigators allege that Haller and Johnson made baseless claims about election fraud, particularly related to Dominion voting machines, which were rejected by courts in several states. Additionally, Joseph reportedly falsely claimed that pro-Trump presidential electors were "duly qualified" in swing states where Biden had actually prevailed. Requests for comment from Haller and Johnson were not immediately answered. Both lawyers have been subject to disciplinary proceedings in other states as a result of their involvement in the 2020 election litigation.
