Bayer has emerged victorious in a lawsuit filed by a California man alleging that exposure to its Roundup weedkiller caused him to develop cancer. This outcome signifies a positive turn for the company, which had faced a series of setbacks in similar trials, culminating in five consecutive losses. The recent verdict, delivered by a jury in San Benito County, California Superior Court, aligns with Bayer's assertion that Roundup is not carcinogenic and did not contribute to the plaintiff's illness.
The plaintiff, Bruce Jones, contended, like numerous others in Roundup lawsuits, that the product led to his non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Following the acquisition of U.S. agrochemical company Monsanto in 2018, Bayer has encountered approximately 165,000 claims related to alleged injuries caused by Roundup. While the preceding losses amassed verdicts exceeding $2 billion, Bayer had previously secured triumphs in nine consecutive trials, thus prevailing in 10 of the last 15 trials.
Despite the recent legal setbacks, Bayer remains resolute in its commitment to contest the cases in court and is opposed to substantial settlement payments. Although the company settled most pending Roundup cases in 2020 for up to $9.6 billion, no resolution was reached for future claims, leaving over 50,000 cases unresolved. As Bayer continues its legal battles, the outcomes of the impending cases are poised to shape the trajectory of this enduring legal dispute.
