London AI Start-Up Wayve Raises $1 Billion in Funding from Tech Heavyweights
London-based Wayve, a leader in A.I. for autonomous vehicles, secured $1 billion in funding from investors including SoftBank, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Founded in 2017, by Alex Kendall.
London-based Wayve, a pioneer in artificial intelligence systems for self-driving vehicles, announced on Tuesday that it successfully raised a staggering $1 billion in funding. This substantial investment marks a significant milestone for a European start-up and reflects the soaring confidence of investors in the transformative potential of A.I. in various industries.
Leading the investment round, the Japanese multinational conglomerate, SoftBank, known for its prior investments in tech giants such as Uber, joined forces with industry heavyweights Microsoft and Nvidia to bolster Wayve's growth. Notably, Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief A.I. scientist, was among the previous investors in Wayve.
Company Background
Established in 2017 by Alex Kendall, a dedicated computer vision and robotics scholar from Cambridge University, Wayve has been at the forefront of developing embodied A.I. systems, distinguishing itself from the generative A.I. models pursued by industry peers like OpenAI and Google. These embodied A.I. systems serve as the cognitive core for physical entities such as automobiles, robots, and industrial systems, empowering them to autonomously execute real-time decisions without external intervention.
With this latest funding, which significantly surpasses the previous $300 million raised, Wayve is poised to further advance the development and deployment of its groundbreaking A.I. technology across diverse sectors. The precise valuation post-investment, however, remains undisclosed.
