Man Attacks Reverend During Washington Church Service

A Washington church service turned violent on Tuesday night when a man, later identified as Joshua James Sommers, allegedly assaulted Reverend David Gaines at Spokane Cathedral. The incident took place during the church's healing novena.

Dramatic footage recorded during the service captured the moment when the assailant rushed toward the reverend, attempting to deliver punches. Despite the unexpected attack, Rev. Gaines managed to deflect most of the blows but did sustain some strikes. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Rev. Gaines described the incident, stating, "I've been called athletic, all sorts of things that I've never been called before – but in happy ways." He recounted his attempts to defend himself, particularly against the assailant's left-handed blows.

Unprecedented Experience

Rev. Gaines, who has served as a priest for over a decade, expressed that he had never encountered such violence within a church setting before. He maintained his composure during the assault, as evidenced by video footage in which he can be heard calmly urging the assailant, "It’s OK," and encouraging him to calm down. Reflecting on his response, Rev. Gaines humbly attributed his demeanor to a higher power, speculating that he might have been influenced by the "Holy Spirit."

Following the incident, authorities informed Rev. Gaines that Sommers was reportedly suffering from schizophrenia. Rev. Gaines revealed that Sommers was not a regular churchgoer but had been brought to the service by a mother and son who had noticed him living on the streets. In a poignant display of compassion, the family had invited him to join them, hoping to extend warmth and healing to the man during the winter months.

Despite the violent episode, Rev. Gaines expressed gratitude that Sommers was brought to the worship service. He noted that, prior to the outburst, Sommers had been sitting peacefully for nearly an hour, contributing to a sense of normalcy. Rev. Gaines emphasized his appreciation for the family's act of kindness, saying, "I'm grateful that they brought him in, in God's providence."

In the aftermath of the incident, Rev. Gaines called for ongoing prayers for Sommers, who now faces criminal charges related to the assault. He articulated his belief that, despite the unexpected turn of events, there is a greater purpose at play. "In God's great mystery and plan, I am confident that God will do something good for Josh, for our community, and help us grow in healing," he expressed. Rev. Gaines urged the community to continue offering love and prayers for those affected by mental health challenges, highlighting the importance of compassion and understanding. 

As the legal proceedings unfold, Sommers has been charged with third-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, and fourth-degree attempted assault, as indicated in court records. The charges reflect the severity of the incident and the impact it had on both the reverend and the congregation present at the service. Despite the turmoil caused by the assault, Rev. Gaines maintains a perspective of hope and faith. He believes that even in the face of adversity, there is a potential for redemption and healing. "Please pray for Josh. [We need to] love those who are mentally ill as Christ commands. Part of that love is to offer prayers and sacrifices for him," he emphasized, urging the community to continue seeking understanding and compassion for those facing mental health challenges.
