Man Who Attacked Las Vegas Judge Indicted for Attempted Murder

A Nevada Judge Attacked

A grand jury in Las Vegas has indicted Deobra Redden for attempted murder after he leaped over a judicial bench and attacked a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing. The incident, which was captured in a viral courtroom video, took place last month and has now resulted in a nine-count indictment against Redden. His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 29.

The Attack

The attack occurred as Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was about to deliver Redden’s sentence in an attempted battery case on Jan. 3. The new indictment alleges that Redden attacked Holthus by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat, and hitting her on the head using unknown means. He is also accused of assaulting a Las Vegas police officer.

Legal Proceedings and Background

Redden’s foster mother and older sister revealed that he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, although court records show he was found competent to stand trial. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson highlighted Redden’s adult criminal history, which includes convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, mostly involving violent acts. A lawyer who represented Redden at the initial hearing did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment on Saturday.
