Meet Chiquinquiro, the Unconventional Street Dog Reporter of Cuernavaca

The community of reporters in Cuernavaca, from various media outlets, including television, radio, print, and digital media, has adopted a stray dog with unusual behavior as their mascot. Chiquinquiro is often spotted amidst social demonstrations, official events, and marches around the Historic Center of Cuernavaca. While there are numerous street dogs in the city center, Chiquinquiro seems to have a penchant for "reporting" and getting involved in the hustle and bustle. Unlike other dogs that follow those who feed them or show them affection, Chiquinquiro appears to possess a special intelligence. Some reporters have suggested fitting him with a collar labeled "PRESS," and he is affectionately known as "the ReporDog."

The Beginnings of Chiquinquiro

Chiquinquiro's story began when he was seemingly abandoned during a demonstration by Antorcha Campesina. His friendly nature helped him survive among the merchants in the heart of Cuernavaca. According to accounts, a group of dogs accompanying a homeless, unkempt man named "el Rastas" attacked Chiquinquiro, leaving him badly injured. Several reporters who witnessed the incident took pity on the pup and tended to his wounds. Grateful for their help, Chiquinquiro began following the reporters, one of whom was Silvia Lozano, who took a particular liking to the dog and named him "Chiquinquiro."

Silvia and Chiquinquiro

When asked why she had chosen that name, Silvia explained that it sounded like "chicarcas," a nickname of a photographer who also adopted the "reporter dog." As a result, Chiquinquiro has been embraced by locals, traders, and even vendors at the "Adolfo López Mateos" market in Cuernavaca.

The Mischievous Chiquinquiro

Described by Silvia Lozano as a "rascal," Chiquinquiro has his own temperament. One Monday morning, during a flag-raising ceremony attended by high-ranking state government officials, including Governor Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Chiquinquiro decided to "show love" to another dog, much to the astonishment and bemusement of those present. Some reporters discreetly removed both dogs from the scene.

Supporting Social Causes

During a recent demonstration by the Judiciary, a march from the courts on Leyva Street to the new judicial offices in the Flores Magón neighborhood, approximately 7 kilometers away, took place. As seen in a photograph, Chiquinquiro led the march, and many believed he would give up and return to the center after a few blocks. However, with genuine enthusiasm, barking, and prancing, the dog reporter accompanied the demonstrators to their destination. It appears that some of his reporter friends eventually returned him to the city center by vehicle.

If you stroll through the streets of downtown Cuernavaca, you may still encounter Chiquinquiro, the street dog reporter, whether he's following a march, barking at the police, or simply enjoying a nap.
