Meta Rolls Back Restrictions on Trump's Facebook and Instagram Accounts for Presidential Campaigns
Meta is lifting restrictions on Donald Trump's social media accounts, allowing him to communicate without risk of suspension.

Meta announced on Friday that it is lifting some of the restrictions placed on former President Donald J. Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts to allow presidential candidates to communicate "on the same basis" with people using its services.
Previous Restrictions
Under the previous restrictions, Mr. Trump could have faced suspension from Meta's platforms, which also include Threads and WhatsApp, if he had posted content aiming to delegitimize the November election and other similar actions. However, Meta has now decided to relax those restrictions, reducing the likelihood of a suspension if Mr. Trump violates the company's terms of service.
Return to Pre-January 6 Status
This move signifies a further return to Mr. Trump's social media accounts to their pre-January 6, 2021, status. Following the events on January 6, Mr. Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were indefinitely suspended due to concerns that his posts could incite further violence. Last year, Meta reinstated his accounts but with certain restrictions; however, as of Friday, those penalties are no longer in effect.
"We believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis," stated Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs. He mentioned that the penalties imposed on Mr. Trump's accounts were a response to the extreme circumstances following January 6 and are now deemed unnecessary.
