Michigan Woman Found Living Inside Sign Atop Grocery Store Raises Questions About Homelessness
Michigan woman found homeless, living inside grocery store sign with desk, coffee maker, and computer; not facing charges.
Recently, in a surprising case in Midland, Michigan, a 34-year-old woman was found to be living inside a sign on top of a grocery store. The discovery was made on April 23 when contractors at the store noticed someone running an extension cord up to the roof where there’s a plugin. The woman had been living inside the sign for about a year and had set up a mini home with a desk, a coffee maker, a printer, and a computer.
The Unusual Living Situation
The sign, which is about five feet wide and eight feet high, contains a door, making it accessible from the roof of the store. Despite the unusual nature of the situation, it is reported that the woman did not indicate how she was accessing the sign and there was no sign of a ladder. When questioned, she stated that she had been living inside the sign while working elsewhere.
Police Response and Resolution
Midland Police Officer Brennon Warren commented on the situation, expressing his surprise at the discovery and the makeshift living space. The woman, who is identified as homeless, was not charged and agreed to vacate the sign after being provided with information about services in the area.
The grocery store's parent company, SpartanNash, released a statement emphasizing the need for safe and affordable housing, while acknowledging the widespread issue of homelessness that requires community collaboration to address.
