Microsoft's Surface Pro: A Solid Upgrade to an AI-Driven PC Line with Energy-Efficient Chips
Microsoft's new Surface Pro with AI-powered chip impresses with longer battery life and sleek design, but AI features are still pending.

Microsoft recently announced its latest line of Windows PCs, designed with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). The new computers feature chips from Qualcomm, known for their improved energy efficiency compared to previous Intel processors.
New Copilot+ PCs
One of the initial devices to hit the market is the Surface Pro convertible tablet, part of the Copilot+ PC lineup. This tablet is capable of handling demanding computing tasks and offers a longer battery life than laptops equipped with Intel processors.
Microsoft's move mirrors Apple's successful introduction of custom energy-efficient Arm-based chips into its MacBooks in 2020.
Performance and Features
The Surface Pro boasts impressive hardware, including Qualcomm's 12-core Snapdragon X Elite chip, a 512GB solid-state drive, 16GB of RAM, and an OLED display. With snappy performance for web browsing, productivity software, and certain video games, the device promises a premium user experience.
The tablet's detailed and bright display, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate, offers smooth scrolling and responsive touchscreen functionality. Additionally, the Surface Pro delivers over eight hours of battery life in initial testing, with a promise of up to 10 hours of web browsing.
Enhanced Application Compatibility
Unlike previous Arm-powered Surface PCs, the new models can run a wider range of applications, thanks to a new emulator called Prism. This development ensures that buyers won't have to compromise on compatibility when choosing these devices.
Artificial Intelligence Features
Microsoft has integrated artificial intelligence features into the Windows 11 operating system, leveraging the neural processing unit (NPU) present in the Copilot+ PCs. These features include "Eye Contact" for video calls and a "Cocreator" mode in Paint, which utilizes the NPU to generate images based on user input.
Accessories and Connectivity
The Surface Pro comes with an AC adapter that magnetically latches onto Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port. It also features two USB-C ports for added convenience. Users can connect the tablet to up to three monitors at 4K resolution for extended productivity.
For those interested in the keyboard and stylus accessories, Microsoft offers a standard Surface Pro Keyboard and a Surface Pro Flex Keyboard bundle with a Slim Pen included. While the Bluetooth-connected Flex Keyboard promises 41 hours of continuous typing, the traditional Surface Pro Keyboard continues to offer a reliable typing experience.
Challenges and Future Developments
Despite the advancements, Microsoft has faced challenges with certain applications and delayed the launch of the "Recall" feature due to security concerns. However, the company continues to work on improving app compatibility and enhancing the capabilities of the Copilot assistant.
