Misunderstanding leads to destructive high-speed motorcycle chase in Georgia

A Georgia man, Codey Wayne Shoemake, was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase due to a misunderstanding. Despite believing there was a warrant out for him, which there wasn't, he fled, resulting in a destructive motorcycle crash. The 33-year-old was charged with felony-level fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving.

Details of the incident

The incident unfolded when a sheriff's deputy noticed Shoemake speeding with a "non-functional tag" on Highway 365 in Baldwin. Upon realizing he was being followed, Shoemake accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 96 miles per hour. The chase ended when he crashed his Harley-Davidson motorcycle into a ditch. Shoemake allegedly fled because he thought the police were after him for still having his ex-girlfriend's vehicle in his possession.

Legal proceedings

After receiving medical treatment, Shoemake was processed into the Habersham County Detention Center and released on a $3,720 bond. The Habersham County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident.
