In the aftermath of the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin on the set of the Western film Rust, the legal proceedings have brought the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, to face sentencing for involuntary manslaughter.
Conviction and Sentencing Hearing
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted by a jury for the involuntary manslaughter that occurred during a rehearsal in October 2021. The sentencing hearing has been scheduled for the morning of April 15, 2022, allowing two hours for the proceedings. The possibility of an appeal has been mentioned by her defense attorney, Jason Bowles.
Legal Ramifications
The charge of involuntary manslaughter carries a potential felony sentence of up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. Gutierrez-Reed is currently being held at the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility as she awaits sentencing.
Alec Baldwin's Legal Proceedings
Alec Baldwin, indicted by a grand jury in January, has pleaded not guilty to the involuntary manslaughter charge. His trial is scheduled for July 2022. Despite the tragic outcome, Baldwin has maintained that he did not intentionally pull the trigger. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who is overseeing Gutierrez-Reed's sentencing, is also assigned to preside over Baldwin’s trial.
