Mysterious Cyanide Poisoning Kills Six at Bangkok Luxury Hotel, Suspected Investment Motive

Authorities in Thailand are reeling from the shock of a horrific discovery at a Bangkok luxury hotel, where six individuals, including two Vietnamese Americans, were found dead. The police have confirmed that the cause of death was cyanide poisoning, and are currently operating under the belief that one of the deceased was responsible for the poisoning, which is suspected to have stemmed from a botched investment. The grim find was made by a maid at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, with the victims failing to check out on time.

Traces of the deadly substance were discovered in the cups and thermoses found in the room, corroborating the initial suspicions of the law enforcement officers. 

Moving forward, authorities conducted autopsies on the bodies, which confirmed the presence of cyanide in their bloodstreams. Moreover, the absence of any signs of physical trauma bolstered the theory that the victims had indeed fallen prey to poisoning. The head of the forensic medicine department at Chulalongkorn University’s medical school, Kornkiat Vongpaisarnsin, conveyed these findings during a news conference, shedding light on the harrowing circumstances surrounding the deaths. 

The Victims

The deceased individuals comprised both men and women, with ages ranging from 37 to 56. Among them were Chong Sherine, 56, and Dang Hung Van, 55, both of whom held American citizenship. The four other victims were identified as Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan, 47; Pham Hong Thanh, 49; Tran Dinh Phu, 37; and Nguyen Thi Phuong, 46. It is believed that the latter four individuals were of Vietnamese descent.

While the specific identity of the alleged perpetrator has not been disclosed, the prevailing belief is that the individual in question harbored grievances related to an unsuccessful investment endeavor, which ultimately culminated in this tragic episode. 

Further details surfaced, asserting that a husband and wife among the deceased had invested a substantial sum, approximately 10 million baht (equivalent to $278,000), along with two other parties. The purpose of this investment venture was purportedly to facilitate the construction of a hospital in Japan.
