Nancy Pelosi Calls for Netanyahu's Resignation Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict
Pelosi calls for Netanyahu's resignation over Gaza response, obstructing peace, amid growing criticism from Democrats and tensions with the U.S.
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has called for the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing his aggressive response to Hamas' Oct. 7 attack in Gaza. Pelosi, during an interview with Irish public broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann, expressed her belief that Netanyahu has been obstructing peace efforts for years.
Increasing Criticism from Democrats
Democrats, including President Biden, have increasingly criticized Netanyahu's leadership amidst Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza. Pelosi, while acknowledging Israel's right to self-defense, condemned Netanyahu's policies and actions, describing them as "terrible" and asserting that he should take responsibility and step down.
Obstacle to Peace
Pelosi emphasized that Netanyahu has been a longstanding obstacle to achieving a two-state solution, questioning whether he is afraid of peace, incapable of achieving it, or simply unwilling to pursue it. She also urged the Biden administration to cease weapons transfers to Israel.
Support for New Leadership
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also voiced a similar sentiment, stating that Netanyahu has "lost his way" and advocating for elections to establish a new government in Israel. The growing concerns over civilian casualties and Netanyahu's unwavering military actions have strained the relationship between the U.S. and Israeli leadership.
U.S. Aid to Israel
Despite the mounting criticism, the U.S. Senate advanced a foreign aid package providing an additional $26.4 billion to Israel, following the House's approval of $95 billion in foreign aid over the weekend. The aid package has sparked discussions and debates over the U.S.'s role in the ongoing conflict.
