Nayib Bukele Asserts Victory in El Salvador's Reelection with 85% of the Votes

Nayib Bukele Claims Victory in El Salvador's Reelection
Nayib Bukele emerged victorious in the presidential elections in El Salvador, securing an overwhelming 85% of the votes. Despite the local Constitution's prohibition of consecutive presidential terms, Bukele is anticipated to govern the Central American nation until 2029.
Key Details of the Election
Over 6 million people participated in the legislative and presidential elections in El Salvador. A total of 1,590 polling stations were set up, with security ensured by 24,000 police officers.
Opposition and Election Process
Bukele competed against five other candidates: Mariana Murillo, Manuel Flores, Joel Sánchez, Luis Alberto Parada, and José Javier Renderos. Despite election day restrictions, Bukele called on people to go to the polling stations to continue "combating the gangs" and emphasized the civic duty to vote and express the desired path for El Salvador.
Challenges and Accusations
Bukele accused overseas polling centers of closing despite voters still waiting in line, prompting him to consider taking action and urging the local Prosecutor's Office to intervene. The opposition accuses him of seeking a new Constitution to allow indefinite reelection, a claim that Bukele himself has denied.
