Nebraska Woman Accused of Stealing $27,000 Worth of Gas Using Rewards Card Loophole

Nebraska woman accused of using rewards card loophole to steal over 7,000 gallons of gas worth $27,000, facing criminal charge.

A 45-year-old Nebraska woman is in hot water after being charged with exploiting a loophole to obtain over 7,000 gallons of free gas worth more than $27,000. The woman allegedly misused her rewards card from Pump and Pantry in Lincoln, Nebraska, at least 510 times over a span of six months.

Exploiting a Software Update

Reports reveal that the woman took advantage of a software update from November 2022, which inadvertently allowed users to manipulate orders and rewards cards at the fuel pump. By swiping their rewards card twice, individuals were able to switch the gas pump from regular mode to demo mode, thereby administering free gas without authorization.

Allegations of Payment for Free Gas

In addition to the unauthorized use of the rewards card, the woman is further accused of receiving payment for providing her card to another individual for the purpose of obtaining free gas. It is reported that she received $500 in exchange for $700 worth of gas from the rewards member.

Police Intervention and Investigations

The woman's misdeeds came to light when Lincoln police reviewed surveillance footage, which showed her repeatedly pumping gas into her vehicle. Subsequently, the police identified her using the rewards card information and court records. During the investigation, the woman disclosed that a man, who subsequently passed away, had given her the rewards card as a gesture to settle a car debt.

Arrest and Estimated Losses

The woman was arrested on March 6 on a theft charge and was granted a bond of $7,500. Authorities estimate that between November 13, 2022 and June 1, 2023, the woman acquired 7,413.59 gallons of free gasoline, resulting in a financial loss of $27,860.27 for the gas station manager.
