New England Declares Level 1 Emergency Alert Amid Heat Wave Power Struggle

Today, June 18, the power grid operator for New England declared a level 1 emergency alert to address the strain on supplies during a powerful heat wave in the northeastern US.

According to ISO New England Inc. spokesman Matt Kakley, the alert was prompted by the offline status of some power generation serving the region. This situation left the grid operator without sufficient electricity to meet demand while maintaining required reserves. As a result, electricity prices briefly surged to $1,993 per megawatt-hour, exceeding the day-ahead cost by more than 10 times.

Grid Conditions and Emergency Level

Level 1 grid emergencies signal the need for more power supplies, but they do not indicate imminent blackouts. With the official start of summer approaching, New England faces intense heat, making grid conditions particularly challenging. This situation is exacerbated by the recent permanent shutdown of a large natural gas power plant in Massachusetts, leaving little margin for error when existing generation fails.

To address the supply shortage, back-up oil generation was activated to meet demand. This measure accounted for 4% of the supply at about 6:37 p.m., providing support during the critical period.
